Course: GD 200 – Graphic Design
Role: Designer
Duration: 3 weeks
Summary: For this project, I created a packaging for the album, Nils Frahm’s Spaces. Using collage and typography studies, the task was to integrate these elements in a way that evokes a feeling from listening to the album. So during class, we listened to the music for inspiration. I decided to use the theme, chaos vs. space because I thought the music sounded clean, peaceful and relaxing, and it was nice having my own space while being surrounded by others working on the same project. I created my own raw materials by printing out the text, and ripping and overlapping them for added texture. I made multiple versions for the record sleeve and labels, received feedback, and revised my designs. The following is the final version of my composition.
REFLECTION:
The in-class group critiques helped me improve my graphic design, especially in abstract work. The critique I got made my designs better and pushed me harder to make good design decisions. I got to practice expressing my ideas to an audience by explaining to them the context, or what I did and why I did it. There are steps, and you can’t shortcut any steps in making good designs.
